ACTION ALERT

TO ALL FRIENDS OF BURMA

To all Burmese and their international friends:

Every one of us who love peace and democracy prevailing in Burma are now aware of the reality that the current Burmese political condition is in crucial juncture.

The National League for Democracy (NLD) who won the democratic elections in 1990 has eventually demanded to the ruling military government to come up with a plan by April 17, 2006, to convene the first parliament with elected representatives.

Ignoring this call, the military regime has clearly stated to the international community that the generals will no longer regard the NLD as prominent political force of Burma.

We now can assume that the regime will flatly deny providing positive response to the NLD call which intendeds to discuss about the progress of Burma and saving the dignity of the Burmese armed forces. Therefore, the NLD has to move forward in order to fulfill the mandate assigned by the people of Burma.

We expect to see increased political confrontations after April 17, 2006 between the NLD and the military government. Given the iron handed suppressions against the people of Burma experienced until now, it is very likely to see more and more arbitrary detentions, beaten to deaths, political assassination attempts and various forms of violent methods hoping to control Burma by a group of brutal military leaders.

Therefore, we urge you to be vigilant and increase your utmost support for the people of Burma by all possible means. Please communicate among us so that we can this time achieve a harmonized movement in the struggle for democracy and human rights well deserved to our motherland.
