NCGUB Welcomes 'High-Level Talks' in Rangoon
Press Release
January 10, 2001
A long declared goal of the democracy movement led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been to set a precedent of resolving
political problems through peaceful means in Burma.
The National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB)
therefore warmly welcomes the news that "secret top-level talks" involving Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Burma's democracy
movement, and the generals of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) are taking place in Rangoon.
The NCGUB is cautiously optimistic that the generals this time round would place the interests of the nation and the people above
other considerations and pursue the goal of national reconciliation and restoration of democracy with sincerity and urgency.
The NCGUB is also confident that Special United Nations Envoy Mr. Razali Ismail will strive to ensure that the advances made in
the talks will lead to substantive discussions.
Prime Minister Dr. Sein Win welcomed the move saying, "The military leaders know that history is in the making today,
and we are hoping that they will look to the future and not the past. Opportunity is at hand for them to join in the efforts of the
people in building a new democratic nation."
