The author of "Unity for Democracy - " has made a very good review of the political scenario in Burma. I feel it only appropriate for me to add some useful remarks for the benefit of many.
As of now, NLD ( with its supporting groups) is the only political force standing alone legally against the mighty military juncta. NLD has being under the microscope of the ruling juncta, and one wrong movement will put the remaining leaders behind bars as the illigitimate government can make orders (which they say laws) to wipe out the opposition groups. They have also demonstrated many bloody acts done by their lackeys with impunity. This is the situation in which the NLD is surviving.
It could have its own strategy which could be kept only in their mind. We cannot expect a "battle cry" from it. It will only be a sucide to eliminate itself, the only " legally elected party of the people " even if not recognized by the juncta, the World does. We can hardly blame their "inactivity" as it is very important for them to stay alive. This is the time for the other opposition forces, inside and outside Burma, to go for the main objective of "Restoring Democracy in Burma" in appropriate strategies.
The juncta is waging a political " war of attrition" on the oppositions. So, the opposition groups should also have to be prepared for this, in addition to their own strategies.(Nelson Mandela's party has done this in their time). The most important element in this fight for democracy is "Unity among Us" , to keep the good guys in solidarity.
Current ageing and ailing leaders, both in junta and opposition, will surely succumb to nature. They should leave their legacy to the new generation, and make good their names in the history of Burmese politics, which nobody can change. People die only once, but their bad names will live forever in history, either as heroes or fools.
New generation leaders should not loosen the objective, and carry on the torch with spirit, unity and activity, in whichever way, appropriate to the time and circumstances.
I am sure that the UN as the World Organization must have a clause, tucked away in their Charters, may be in small prints, how to deal with illegitimate governments in their Organization. If there has been one by which any illegitimate government should ractify their status within a time frame, and expell the defaulters from the Organization.
Failure to do sensible things has caused the world renowned Irish dramatist George Bernard Shaw to call the League Nation as League of Fools. It also made the Late UN Secretary General U Thant, in exasperation for UN's failures during the Congo Crisis of Cold War era, exclaimed " I can't do business with a bunch of clowns". Such failures in current global politics has caused some people calling the UN a paper tiger.
Above mentioned kind of useful clause(s) in UN Charters could stop the dictatorial governments in the World once and for all. I am sure that the "glorified diplomats and geniuses " of the UN can find it out.
As for now, let's hope for the best, and some sensible results from the Senior UN official Ibrahim Gambari from his on-going visit to Burma.
