I wish to draw the attention of your readers to Myanmar (Burma) in post-colonial years. However, one woman will not be celebrating Burmese Women's Day this year.

She is Ma Khin Khin Leh, a primary school teacher who was arrested with her three-year-old daughter on July 19, 1999, a day on which her husband was organising a pro-democracy march.

Although Ma Khin Khin Leh's daughter was released from custody on 24 July 24, 1999, Ma Khin Khin Leh remains in prison in Burma, solely because of her peaceful activities and political beliefs, which happen to differ from those of the military government in Burma.

I am writing this letter to ask that the Burmese government release Ma Khin Khin Leh on July 3 to celebrate Burmese Women's Day.
